Matt Moritz created Well Rounded Events out of a love for riding bicycles. For traveling, daily transportation, and general recreation. Seeing the world at a pace somewhat faster than hiking pace, being able to cover human scale distances under ones own power has enticed Matt since his first experience of combined camping and biking in 2001. Since then, he’s dreamed of sharing this experience with others.
Matt acquired a reassurance that bicycling for transportation was normal at a young age when his father was using a hand-built Windsor 10-speed to ride to and from work in San Diego, CA during the mid and late 1970s. When it came time for Matt to take his first summer job in college in the early 1990s, without a driver’s license, he purchased his own first bicycle (the Windsor wasn’t usable at the time) and commuted 2-miles for a second and third shift job at a nearby electric generation plant outside Homer City, PA. Matt returned to bicycle commuting the following summer when working in Pittsburgh, PA as a temp.
From then, he took a long break from using a bicycle aside from a one-day mountain biking excursion in the late 1990s. After moving to Massachusetts in 1998, once again purchased a bicycle intending to ride the local Minuteman Bikeway for occasional weekend recreation.
Matt’s obsession with bicycle travel came in 2001 when, as part of a larger trip, he spent 2 weeks biking and camping with Flying Kiwi in New Zealand with his three best friends. Later that same year, he and a companion spent another week bicycling from Vienna to Prague on a luggage supported Inn to Inn tour with Sherpa Expeditions. While part of a larger adventure, the bicycling time left a big impression. Combined with a gift membership to Adventure Cycling Association in 2002, Matt hasn’t looked back to a non-bicycling lifestyle since.
Since 2002, Matt has trained for and completed several MS-150 rides in Western Pennsylvania and New England and participated in bicycle club riding weekend getaways (group cooking and riding), taken several supported camping and inn-to-inn tours, and starting in 2008, commuted to work by bicycle almost daily, year-round.
In 2010, he became eligible as an Adventure Cycling tour leader and since 2011 has worked as staff or tour leader for several tours in several regions. In 2012, he also became certified as a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor, and since 2007 has been active in the advocacy community of Providence, RI.
He now serves as a member of the Providence Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Board President of the Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition, and Advocacy Chair of the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen as well as chief cook, bottle washer, map examiner and dreamer for Well Rounded Events.
